Saturday night the Brown University family, friends, and community were horrified to
learn of the brutal murders and attempted murders of innocent students. I worked at
Brown University at the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies. It was a life changing
experience that had a huge impact on my career but more importantly on my
understanding of people. The compassion of the people we worked for, and with, was my
first true experience of knowing integrity.
Brown University has welcomed Phoenix Odyssey into their classrooms. The students
and professors we have met are so engaged, passionate, respectful, and intelligent. These
students will have a profound impact on our world. They care. We have had the great
fortune to have gotten to know Nina, a Brown student, as she helped navigate how we
could build our community support through our Phoenix Odyssey web site and her
interviews with our graduates. Unfortunately, someone decided that his weapon was the
impact he wanted to make on this world. He wanted to destroy hopefulness, kindness,
growth, and lives. I hope he does not succeed.
